the daily gamecock

The Daily Gamecock is the University of South Carolina’s student-run and editorially independent newspaper. The paper covers the university, as well as Columbia as a whole. In addition to daily newsletter content, The Daily Gamecock has three print editions every semester, which fill newsstands across campus and Columbia. While at TDG, I was a senior designer and the design director. I had the opportunity to lay out stories and even design covers for the print editions. I also frequently contributed to daily newsletter content.

switching seasons

Switching Seasons was The Daily Gamecock's Fall 2022 themed print edition devoted to winter sports. I designed the cover as a senior designer, and I wanted to emulate the grit and texture of sports photo graphics and designs. As a member of the design team, I was also involved in laying out the stories within the print edition as well.

october news mag

In Fall 2023, The Daily Gamecock transitioned from its themed editions to monthly news magazines. The October 2023 news magazine was the second of the semester, and its cover story was about busking. As the design director, I helped conceive the idea for the photo illustration, which is an open guitar case with cash tips, which street performers (buskers) often have while performing. I also helped during the cover shoot itself and did the design to fit TDG’s new print style.

Illustrations & Infographics

As a designer for The Daily Gamecock, the most common assignments were for daily newsletter content. TDG designs are meant to visualize what photos cannot: specific data in infographics or abstract ideas and concepts in illustrations. Some of my favorite designs for TDG were illustrations for columns, since they allowed me to be more creative and lean into the abstract nature of designs).
